Making a choice to attend a college that specializes in the fields of art or design of some students can be a difficult decision. Not only do you have to go through many of the same admission requirements for four year universities, but they also have the added pressure to present a portfolio of your creative work.

The portfolio is often the breaking point for many in the application process and for some it may prevent them from completing their application. The portfolio should not be scary or a barrier to enter the college of your choice as long as it is approached in a thoughtful and serious. Hopefully this article will help ease some fears and be a guide to creating the best portfolio possible for each individual student.

It is very important to establish a list of colleges you are considering applying and contact each of their departments to obtain their admission requirements. Some schools only accept original art while some do not accept slides, and some have size limitations. The required content of the portfolio may also differ from one college to the criteria of each school and should be followed as closely as possible.

There are also summer programs that provide pre-university students the chance to spend four to six weeks at an art school to help them acquire basic skills in drawing art, color and design, as well as allowing the opportunity to receive college credit and experience. Most colleges provide housing and some form of scholarship to their summer programs and pre-college should be contacted prior to April 1 for information.

A young artist is usually their own worst critic, and should follow the advice of their admissions counselor about what to include in their portfolio. You do not always want to show your favorite room, sometimes admissions committees want to see specific types of work. It can be a self-portrait, still life observational drawings, works in pastel color, or a collage. Observational work:

You should always give a brief description on the back of each photo explaining why you made this particular impression or group of prints.

The graphics and digital media work:
During the presentation graphic s and digital media work, make sure your work is as complete as possible. The portfolio should include a printed copy of the work and a copy of the disc format with the attached instructions (check with each college to see what is compatible with their equipment and in what format they accept.)


PRESENTATION Presentation of the portfolio is very important to some schools and it is less important to others. Always try to follow the guidelines of each college to the best of your ability and if you have questions about your portfolio, please call the Office of Admissions of the school you are applying for directions. During the presentation of your portfolio in the two slides or original format, always include the following.

Slides:
If you need to photograph your work on slides, always take enough slides of each individual work so that you can send them to all schools that you have an demand for (it is better to have too many than too fe w.)
Shoot the slides clear and precise. /> Include a separate slide description.

Original work: Do not include

Include your most recent work.
Includes mainly works finished or completed (avoid sending too many studies or gestures.)
Include your name, date, title of work and your social security number on the back of each implemented.
Photograph on slides all work 3-dimensional/sculptural (do not post in 3 dimensions of work.)

Video / disk / CD-ROM portfolios: Do
not assume that the panel accepts a portfolio of new media. Check with each college individually to see if they will accept new media presentations and in what format they can accommodate.

Requirements for International Applicants:
All students whose first language is not E nglish must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and achieve a minimum score of 550 and a minimum of 600 is required for admissions to graduate school. Accepted students will be tested for placement in English during orientation week. For students who would benefit from additional studies in English, many colleges offer intensive ESL.

All candidates who have studied in foreign countries must submit certified English translations of all academic records. Records that do not have the English translation will not be accepted and will delay the admissions process. In some cases it may be necessary to ask the applicant for international a comprehensive assessment of foreign credentials. If necessary, the forms and instructions will be sent directly to the student.

International students accepted for admission who need a student visa to enter the United States must submit two letters of financial verification as described below:

1. A letter from a parent of the student, the sponsor or the sponsor showing a guarantee of payment of tuition and living expenses of the student while attending Otis.

2. A letter from the bank's parent or sponsor or sponsoring organization, certifying that sufficient funds to support education of the student and living expenses is available. Communication must be in English or accompanied by a certified translation in English, and the funds must be in U.S. dollars. Respond to these letters to the attention of the Office Otis Admissions.
